Our property can be seen in the background.
On Wednesday, January 9 I left with my granddaughter Victoria for a long planned holiday in Qld. It is hard to go on holiday when you are running a farm on your own most of the time, so with Mark home from his job, I had booked my tickets and was going for 1 week. Every day had a plan.
On Thursday 10th I got a call from my son David and he told me that everyone had been trying to get hold of me and we had a bush fire burning behind our property. Fortunately the wind was not blowing and it was not spreading very fast. Friday Morning it had changed. The wind was blowing from the north and sending the fire right for our property. I called and changed my plans and flew home that afternoon.
To this day I cannot believe how lucky we were. Our property got singed and the Elvis helicopter put out several grass fires here and there, but not one burned tree. The horses got used to the helicopter finally and put their heads down and grazed.
The photos show how close the fires were. One is from right across the road and one is from the back corner of our property and the neighbours property. Much too close for my liking.
I must give the highest praise to our CFA, and DSE.
